Blue Plaque unveiled at Leeds Media Centre

Leeds Media Centre has recently been awarded with an iconic Blue Plaque to mark its importance in local history.

The building which now provides serviced office space available for hire and is home to a range of independent media and music companies, education providers and community projects, was formerly the headquarters of Leeds Trade Council.

Leeds Trade Council was established in 1860 and by 1868 twenty-seven craft based unions were members. Leeds Trade Council appointed the art-deco building on Savile Mount as their headquarters in 1974 and it remained so until 1994. Leeds Trade Council fought hard for workers’ rights at a time when fair wages and security of employment were hard to come by. There is no doubt that in its heyday the Trades Council in the Savile Mount building was a hive of activity, playing an important role in the life of busy industrial Leeds.

In 2001 the building was converted into Host Media Centre and was opened by Melanie Brown. The building is now known as Leeds Media Centre and continues to encourage local enterprise with a view to helping people set up their own businesses.
A Blue Plaque has been awarded thanks to funding from Leeds Trade Council and the work that the Heritage Lottery Fund have done to get Leeds Media Centre the recognition it deserves.
